Nurse Practitioner-Support Group-Cessation-Anita

Anita’s Story: Finding cessation success from many supports, including A.C.E.S.S.

Anita started smoking at the age of 14 and now, at 52, has successfully quit. How did she achieve her goal to kiss tobacco goodbye? The key was taking advantage of a number of different quit supports and interventions throughout her quitting process.  From searching internet sites, receiving direct phone calls from smokershelpline, taking advantage of Carlington Community Health Centre’s nurse practitioner support, and finally, enrolling in an A.C.E.S.S. support group, Anita’s  was a journey of enlightenment that was helped by gathering information and finding support. When asked about what helped her most, Anita states that she simply used everything she could find for support, with the weekly A.C.E.S.S. group being the final piece of the puzzle. She feels she has quit for the long term. “I had practice at it,“ she says. In particular, Smokershelpline “kept me accountable, in a very nice way,“ and helped her follow her quit plan. She received 5 calls from a SHL quit coach with information and support which she found helpful. The A.C.E.S.S. 8 week group session helped solidify her success, as she needed more direct support from others who “mirrored my reflections of myself.”Her message to others trying to quit? “You can do it, and love yourself enough to quit.” read more..
