Deficit battle won't cause fight between old and young

(Reuters) - Now that the Super Committee has ground to a halt, the threatened "sword of Damocles" is poised to slash $1.2 trillion in federal spending. As we move to this next phase of the budget wars, deficit hawks will rev up one of their most phony arguments -- namely, that protecting entitlement programs rewards the old at the expense of the young. The debt ceiling deal last summer calls for automatic cuts to start in 2013, absent a Super Committee deal, with the reductions split evenly between defense and domestic spending programs -- but Social Security and Medicare are mostly exempt. ... read more..

Red Meat Eaters-Stroke Risk

Frequent red meat eaters at higher risk of stroke

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A high-protein diet might benefit health in some ways, but depending on what kind of protein a person consumes, it could raise their stroke risk too, suggests a large new study that finds eating lots of red meat ups the likelihood of having a stroke while poultry lowers it. "The main message from this paper is that the type of protein or the protein package is really important for the risk of stroke. We have to consider protein in the context of the foods," said Dr. Frank Hu, a professor at the Harvard School of Public Health and one of the authors of the study. ... read more..

What's your fave frozen meal? Here's a coupon (it's progressive, so the more people you share it with, the higher it grows in value!) for Healthy Choice meals.Healthy ChoiceWith Healthy Choice, you can enjoy a more healthful lifestyle without giving up the flavorful foods you love. Our chefs create delicious foods that meet or exceed the highest nutritional standards, while using innovative cooking technologies like steaming to heighten flavor, optimize texture and maximize crispness. From savory soups to great-tasting meals and snacks, you can find Healthy Choice throughout the grocery store and feel confident that you’re making smart decisions about what you eat. Brands with “healthy” in their name are held to a higher nutrition standard set by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Healthy Choice is the only major brand in its category that can call 100% of its products “healthy” as approved by the FDA. This means that each meal must have: • Low fat • Low saturated fat • Controlled sodium and cholesterol • 10% of the daily value for three beneficial nutrients (e.g., calcium, protein, fiber, iron, vitamin A or vitamin C) Company History The Healthy Choice story began with former ConAgra Foods CEO Charles "Mike" Harper. While traveling through California on business, this hot-fudge-sundae lover suffered a mild heart attack. Although he made a full recovery, he needed to re-evaluate his eating habits. So he began a search for foods that satisfied both his taste and health needs. When his search proved unsuccessful, he took it upon himself to bring to market products that taste good and are good for you. And that's how Healthy Choice was born. read more..

ALL ABOUT CARBONATED DRINKS??......Taking soft drinks have become our daily routine without considering their side effects. Carbonated or so called soft drinks have become a part of our diet to such an extent that for many, a meal or a snack without a soft drink is unthinkable. Although soft drinks may provide instant refreshment, they are very harmful to our bodies. A carbonated drink is nothing more than a toxic brew of colouring agents and chemicals with no nutritive value. A regular bottle contains an equivalent of 11 teaspoons of sugar and excessive consumption can lead to increased triglyceride (fat) formation and decreased glucose tolerance, either of which may cause diabetes. A regular can of a soft drink contains 45 milligrams of caffeine and can lead to a dependence on the substance. These drinks have a pH of 3,4 (acidic), which is strong enough to dissolve your teeth and intestinal linings. For habitual drinkers, the risk of bone fractures increases by three to four times and in the long run may even cause osteoporosis. Considering all harmful effects of soft drinks, it only makes sense to switch over to healthier substitutes such as water, fresh juices, flavoured milk, lemon water and green tea. read more..

OBESITY & HEALTH: Obesity today has grown in numbers and continues to grow at an alarming rate. From children to old people, all have adapted a sedentary style of life that requires minimum physical movement. Another factor that contributes obesity is the consumption of food high in fat content.... tinned preserved food has replaced the healthy home cooked food. The main reason for this is the busy schedule that do not permit us to cook fresh food. People literally live on junk food or ready to eat meals. The fresh fruits & vegetables have been replaced by burgers, ice creams, chocolates, non-veg pizzas & carbonated drinks etc. An obese person also runs a high risk of having serious diseases like heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, joint problems, breathing problems, cancer & gall stone etc, thus making it amply evident that these days most of the health problems are more or less related to excess weight of a person. It is very important to get rid of extra weight to remain away from fatal diseases. BALANCED DIET IS NO LONGER AN OPTION BUT A NEED.... NOTHING TASTES AS GOOD AS BEING THIN FEELS. COMMENTARY | Like many women, I have struggled with my weight off and on since I graduated from college. I tried many diets over the years including the three-day diet, the Slim-Fast diet, the Grapefruit Diet, the Cabbage Soup Diet, the onion soup diet and others with varying results. I usually lost some weight, but what it boiled down to was that the diets restricted my calorie intake for a short period after which I went back to eating my normal diet and would eventually regain the weight. After a long series of Failed Diets, I gave up and subsequently gain even more weight. read more..

Foods Containing Carbohydrates-How Safe Are High Protein-Low Carbohydrate Diets

HOW SAFE ARE HIGH PROTEIN AND LOW CARBOHYDRATE DIETS: The theory behind high pro...

HOW SAFE ARE HIGH PROTEIN AND LOW CARBOHYDRATE DIETS: The theory behind high protein and low-carbohydrate diets is that if dieters avoid foods containing carbohydrates i.e. starches or sugars — they will shed pounds. Such diets eliminate or dramatically restrict the intake of fruit, fruit juice, starchy vegetables, beans, bread, rice, cereals, pasta and other grain products, and all other foods containing carbohydrate, leaving a limited diet of foods that contain primarily fat and protein viz. meat, cheese, nonstarchy vegetables, and very little else. As the diet proceeds, the carbohydrate restriction relaxes somewhat, but fatty, high-protein foods continue to dominate the dieter's platter. Low-carbohydrate diets typically include quantities of cholesterol, fat, saturated fat, and protein that exceeds the recommended safe limits set by the National Academy of Sciences, and are often low in fiber and other important dietary constituents. “High-protein diets are not recommended bcoz they restrict healthful foods that provide essential nutrients and do not provide the variety of foods needed to adequately meet nutritional needs. Individuals who follow these diets are therefore at risk for compromised vitamin and mineral intake, as well as potential cardiac, renal, bone, and liver abnormalities overall.” So one should follow the principle of healthy and balanced eating to lose weight. read more..

ALARMING !!! MODERN LIFESTYLES & ERRATIC MEAL TIMINGS: Nowadays, most people just gulp fast foods particularly processed and bottled foods and eat at irregular intervals triggering the incidence of acidity. While acidity itself may appear innocuous, it can trigger more serious conditions like oesophageal and gastric cancers. Surprisingly, very acidic foods such as vinegar and lemons actually reduce acidity while milk, contrary to popular thinking stimulates acid secretion. POSITIVE THINKING AND YOUR HEALTH: “You can’t get much done in life if you only work on the days when you feel good." While everyone seems to know that negative feelings can eventually damage your health, there’s a new theory that a positive attitude can help you sustain good health and maybe even make you feel a whole lot better. Can it chase away illness? It sure can. If a person has the ability to control good health, even a little bit, it’s worth looking into. In other words, If you don’t have anything to lose by maintaining a positive attitude, and all the good health to gain, then why not maintain that optimistic spirit? At the very least, you’ll be happy, contented, and able to handle anything life throws at you. According to a 15-year study by Dutch doctors, involving 545 men between the ages of 64 and 84, optimism and just an overall great positive attitude reduced the health risk by half! That even beats the “laughter is the best medicine” cliché. So, why is it that people with a negative attitude or a feeling of hopelessness seem to sicken, while people with a more positive attitude can recover more easily? Doctors have done studies on the human immune system trying to figure out exactly that. Unfortunately, the immune system cells of people who are hopeless and sad are unable to fight off diseases. When these people are given hope and are able to think in a more positive manner, they develop stronger immune systems. A healthy immune system stands a better chance of fighting off diseases and allowing the person to regain good health. Part of the reason for this is that positive thinking and emotions give a person more energy and stamina; and that helps the immune system. It makes perfect sense that if you can improve the mind, making it more hopeful and positive, it would then affect the entire bodily system, helping to cure what ails you. Unfortunately for us all, hope isn’t something your doctor can prescribe for you; you have to find it on your own. So, before you give in to that constant pity party, consider your health. And never trivialize the power of positive thinking. Prevention would seem to be the ideal way to go. Work on that attitude adjustment now, before you become ill. A change of attitude will help your immune system work at peak efficiency, effectively preventing most illnesses. Let that positive thinking and emotion energize you and make you happier right now. Then learn to maintain that positive flow. The life you save could be your own. Not only will positive attitude help you stay healthier, but it can even delay the aging process. In fact people who view life more positively show fewer signs of frailty than those who have a pessimistic outlook in life. Thus it won't be an exaggeration to say that “A strong positive mental attitude will create more miracles than any wonder drug.” read more..
